The Delta Fire started in the afternoon of September 22, 2018 on Interstate 5 in Shasta County, CA. The fire destroyed several commercial trucks and forced the closure of I5 for more than a week. This image was made five hours after the start of the fire and was taken next to the dividing barrier on Interstate 5. Sometimes an active fire zone takes on a surreal nature. Areas that are usually teeming with people are empty. The interstate that night had an eerie feeling—empty even of firefighters with smoking husks of abandoned trucks scattered along the road.
